Malta | Travel diary & photos

Malta cross engraved in the wall of an old prision

A mostly photographic quick post just to talk about the recent trip I did to Malta.
What to say. At the beginning we were (my journey companion and I) looking for a really low cost destination so, surfing on drungli.com, we found a really cheap flight to Malta and ten minutes later we had booked a room into a guest house in St. Julian.
We didn’t had many expectations about it, but maybe that’s why Malta has been a lovely surprise: the bus pass and the food were super cheap, even big franchises were a bit cheaper than in Italy. This has been a great way to celebrate Valentino’s birthday and most of all to discovery such a beautiful place so close to us!

Three things you probably don’t know about Malta and won’t find on a guide:

-          There are a lots of flies especially in some places. Yep, that’s pretty disgusting.
-          Public gardens are full of beautiful cats that will eventually let you pet them.
-          There are only a few beaches. There are mostly rocks and the water becomes deep instantly.

Day 1
Since the flight was at six in the morning (we had to wake up at three) we were reasonably stunned: we stayed near the hotel and explored the St. Julian’s area, rested on the rocks by the sea and then went to La Valletta, capital of Malta. After a restoring lunch we went visiting the St. John’s Co-Cathedral: the baroque styled cathedral, symbol of St. John’s Knights, is the most beautiful church I’ve ever been in , seriously it’s worth spending those four euros for something so breath-taking. Next we went on a walking tour of the city and stopped at the Upper Barrakka Gardens from where you can enjoy a magnificent view of the port.

Day 2
We took a City Sightseeing bus (I didn’t go on such tour since I was nine yearls old, during my first time in London) and visited the north of Malta: we didn’t stopped many times but we’re pretty satisfied with what we visited. The best part of the day has been Mdina, old capital of Malta and medieval city of the island. Perfect for a long, relaxing walk. Plus there are a lot of cheap places to eat while enjoying a beautiful view. On the way back the stopped at Sliema and did a bit of shopping, ops.

Day 3
Another City Sightseeing, this time in Gozo. We didn’t realize that on Sunday everything is closed, so the visit to the little sister of Malta was quite delusional, it was like walking through a ghost city. Anyway there were beautiful places near the sea, the Blue Window alone was worth the entire day.

Day 4
My favourite! We spent the whole day at the Popeye Village, *original* set of the Disney Popeye movie readapted to be a fun park with water games, pools, bay cruises and actors with costumes of course. There were a lot of activities to do but most of the time we were in the highest pool, from whom you could enjoy a spectacular view of the bay.

Day 5
Last day of shopping in Sliema and then straight to Valletta… too bad  there was a storm coming. We didn’t had the chance to see a lot during our last day but came home really satisfied, we’ll come back to Malta really soon for sure!
